“The 2nd amendment to our constitution is clear. Now this is in light of what’s gone on with Oregon and every time something happens they don’t blame mental illness that our mental health care is out of wack and all of the other problems. And by the way it was a gun free zone. I will tell you, if you had a couple of the teachers or somebody with guns in that room you would have been a hell of a lot better off. You would have been a hell of a lot better off.
“The 2nd amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law abiding American’s. The constitution doesn’t create that right it ensures that the government can’t take it away right? They’re doing all sorts of moves to take it away. Our founding fathers knew and our supreme court has upheld that the 2nd amendment purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families, we need that. In fact I have a license to carry in New York. Can you believe that? Nobody knows that.”
Clinton supports strict gun control laws including a ban on assault rifles
GAIL SANTAMARIA (Audience Member): Hi my name is Gail Santamaria I’m from Maryland, I’m a teacher. My question is about guns. I’m very concerned about the proliferation of guns in America especially as it pertains to school shootings. Do you think that reinstating the ban on assault weapons and banning high capacity magazines would do any good?
HILLARY CLINTON: Yes I do. First of all I think as a teacher or really any parent what’s been happening with these school shootings should cause everybody to just think hard. We make hard choices and we balance competing values all the time and I was disappointed that the congress did not pass universal background checks after the horrors of the shootings at Sandy Hook and now we’ve had more in the time since. I don’t think any parent, any person, should have to fear about their child going to school or going to college because someone for whatever reasons; psychological, emotional, political, ideological, whatever it means, could possibly enter that school property with an automatic weapon and murder innocent children, students, teachers. I’m well aware that this is a hot political subject and again I will speak out no matter what role I find myself in but I believe we need a more thoughtful conversation. We cannot let a minority of people, and that’s what it is, it’s a minority of people hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people. And you are about the 5th person in the last weeks, parents, another teacher, just interested citizens, who have said something similar to me. So my view is that yes we need to thrash this out in the political realm but the vast majority of Americans, even law abiding gun owners, want background checks that work, information that is shared immediately, and an awareness that we’re going to have to do a better job protecting the vast majority of citizens including our children from that very very small group that is unfortunately prone to violence and now with automatic weapons can wreak so much more violence then they ever could have before.
Hillary Clinton on the October, 2015 Oregon school shooting
REPORTER: Can we get a reaction to the Oregon shooting?
HILLARY CLINTON: Oh ya know Dan, it’s just beyond my comprehension that we are seeing these mass murders happen again and again and again. And as I have said we have got to get the political will to do everything we can to keep people safe. I know there is a way to have sensible gun control measures that help prevent violence, prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands, and save lives and I’m committed to doing everything I can to achieve that.
